Kolkata accountant draws new life for himself in Scotland

An accountant from Kolkata has shown that life can change with the mere stroke of pen as he graduated with a Masters in Animation from Duncan of Jordanstone.

Shashank Sharma was working as an accountant for Patni & Co in Kolkata when he decided he wanted to try his hand at animation. “Animation was always there, as something I wanted to do in the back of my mind,” he said.

“I started out as a professional sketch artist with little experience and no opportunities to take it any further, that’s when I came across a multimedia diploma in Kolkata which gave me great experience and the chance to change my life.

“I knew that when I was applying to universities I didn’t have the bachelor’s degree or a background in animation to support my application but I did have my sketches and Dundee offered me the chance to show off my passion for animation.”

The 27 year-old accountant-turn-animator says it was thanks to the Global Excellence Scholarship he was awarded from the University that he got to take the opportunity to transform his life.

“The masters was amazing. It was a very compact one-year course, learning everything from storyboarding to concept art to animating. We got a clear idea of the industry we will be working in and got to try our hand at specialising with parts of the process that took our fancy."

Shashank's uncle and family watched on with pride as he crossed the stage at his graduation.

The rest of his family were unable to attend the graduation but will join in the celebrations at the family home near Kolkata.

Shashank, now living in Edinburgh, Scotland, is now working on finalising his animation show reel and looks forward to the opportunities that await him.

More than 1000 undergraduate and postgraduate students received their degrees, diplomas and other qualifications at the University’s Winter Graduation ceremonies on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 November.
