Biography

Tracy Mackenna is an artist and educator, and an alumna of The Glasgow School of Art and The Hungarian University of Fine Arts.

In her individual research she explores the role of creative writing and visual publishing, often developed in situ and in response to a curated environment. She employs creative and critical writing as a dialogical process and is interested in the playful, provocative and non-linear properties of language use within visual art practice to give new voice to contributors, collaborators and subjects through innovative textual structures and narratives.

Tracy shares a collaborative art practice with Dr Edwin Janssen. This creative and discursive site is where production, presentation, exchange, education and research meet. Creative investigations focus on issues of life and death, cultural identity, notions of place, and visual publishing. Tracy and Edwin are co-curators of ‘The Museum of Loss and Renewal’, a mobile discursive platform that creates space to address issues of societal concern such as wellbeing, end of life and sustainability.

Extensive periods have been spent living and working in Hungary, Romania, France and the Netherlands making art, and establishing art networks and artist-led organisations. Tracy is a founding Director of Glasgow Sculpture Studios, and her contributions to art policy include board membership of The Scottish Arts Council's Reference Group for National Policy for Public Art, Visual Arts Awards Panel, Faculty of Fine Arts at The British School at Rome, Steering Group Pépinières Européennes pour Jeunes Artistes, Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Deveron Projects and Hospitalfield Arts. She is an Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture.

Educational practice at DJCAD is focused on leading the Masters course MFA Art, Society & Publics which she devised. Tracy teaches extensively across Europe and actively contributes to the developing international debate about artistic research through exhibition, publication and presentation.
