Michael studied for his BA at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art and his MFA at the Glasgow School of Art where he went on to complete his doctoral thesis, ‘The Certainty of Chance: Using Novelistic Reflexivity to Design Aspects of Practice’. These research themes have been the basis for numerous projects developed in recent years. Michael has presented his practice in talks and panel discussions including the Hay Literary Festival and in the Dan Graham Pavilion at the Hayward Gallery. He has written catalogue texts for artists such as Saâdane Afif, Nathaniel Mellors and Bruno Peinado. Through his practice, he transforms imagery from fiction, illustration and graphic design into playful installations, liberating images from the flat surface of the page to create witty and exuberant sculptures. Sketches and squiggles are transformed in scale and remade in substantial materials such as concrete, acrylic resin and polyurethane.
He has recently had solo shows at Tramway, Glasgow (2015), and Drawing Room, London (2016), Popcorn Plaza, part of Generation: 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland, Jupiter Artland (2014) and Almost Cut My Hair, part of Generation: 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland, Tramway Hidden Gardens, (2014). Recent group shows include Natural Selection' at Galerie 5, Angers (2016), France and 'Corps narratifs' at the Domaine départemental de Chamarande, Chamarande, France (2016).
