Biography

Jane Keith Graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art with a BDes(HONS) in printed Textiles in 1995.  Since graduating Jane has worked freelance for numerous prestigious clients in UK, USA and Australia, working on a range of diverse projects.  These included developing a southwest rug collection for Christopher Farr Handmade Rugs, whilst based in Santa Fe, New Mexico; developing gift wrapping papers for Designers Guild; solely illustrating a cook book for Liberty of London; and these whilst continuing to supply design work to fashion and furnishing agents on a regular basis.

In 1997 Jane set up Jane Keith Designs, a textile design studio focussing on the design and production of high end, hand printed products.  This was supported by The Scottish Arts Council Business Start up Award, and later the Scottish Arts Council Award for Individual Development.  The company has gained momentum steadily since inception with wide exhibition and trade show experience, in the UK, Europe and USA.  Jane Keith Designs is best known for its contemporary range of hand printed ties, recognised widely through awards which have paid tribute to the ties creativity and uniqueness.  These are sold all over the world, and can be seen regularly on high profile clients.  Recent commissions have included an exclusive tie design for The Scottish Executive, (presented as an Ambassadorial gift), and The University of Dundee Tie commissioned by the Principals Office to create a distinct tie to represent the University.

Jane Keith has been working as a part time lecturer in the School of Design since 1996, working across General Course, Life Drawing and Textiles Departments.  Jane’s specialty lies within pattern making and the translation of textile ideas onto cloth, encouraging students to learn and experiment with diverse dye applications and treatments onto fabric.  Her business experience is also reflected in teaching methods and a link with Industry is always encouraged.

Research Projects

Jane Keith is also actively involved with research, specifically involving establishing and developing new dye applications and processes. The current research project is exploring the boundaries of printed textile design, by marrying new and traditional techniques inspired by the strikingly colourful images sourced from Dundee's world renowned biomedical research.  This research examines how these images are visually communicated on an entirely different scale and format, compared to how they might normally be seen by the scientist. A Scottish Arts Council Creative Development Award was secured to allow this new investigation of work to develop, enabling Jane to take research leave to facilitate the project.
