Jamie D Watt
Drawing on the anti-authoritarian, darkly comedic and democratic ethos of Scottish art, my work investigates cultural tribalism, power structures and the fluid nature of truth and knowledge. Inspired by the theological and social forces that forged modern Scotland, I merge the ecclesiastical with the proletarian and the historical with the cotemporary, to create iconoclastic, often humorous arrangements. My practice uses the visual language and narratives of the past to create cotemporary discourse. This approach leads to enigmatic works as I invite the audience to do their own investigation into the subject matter. My degree show work is loosely based around the life of Thomas Aikenhead, the last person to be executed for blasphemy in Britain. An over looked figure from history whose story still resonates today.
