Digital Interaction Design

Lorretta Reynolds

While the last decade has seen rapid growth within the tabletop game development and the rise of gaming cafes, the majority of games available to people with limited vision remains restricted to expensive tactile versions of traditional games such as Chess. Metagame allows visually impaired people to participate in complex modern games without sighted assistance by using their mobile phones to recognise game elements and engages the wider community of players and designers in inclusive design by encouraging them to create sound tags which not only support but enhance gameplay for app users.

Board games have connected people across geographical, cultural, and societal boundaries for over five thousand years. While the last decade has seen rapid growth within tabletop gaming and the emergence of gaming cafes which encourage game play as a social activity, the majority of games available to people with limited vision remains restricted to expensive tactile, large print, and Braille versions of traditional games such as Chess and Backgammon. Metagame allows visually impaired people to participate in complex modern tabletop games without sighted assistance by using their own mobile phones to recognise cards and other game elements, and engages the wider community of players and designers in the concept of inclusive gaming by encouraging them to create sound tags which not only support, but enhance gameplay for app users.
