Art & Philosophy

Luke Wilson

Unsatisfied unless he is pushing the limits of what he is able to do, Luke's eclectic practice stems from a desire, not only to make effective art, but also to understand how art functions in relation to its audience and creators. In contrast to previous work, this collection is an attempt to engage with the direct process of drawing in order to communicate with the audience through a self-contained, clearly bounded object. The style is drawn from his journal process. Each piece represents a meditation on a particular theme, and engages with this theme through a mixture of drawing and script.

Unsatisfied unless he is pushing the limits of what he is able to do, Luke's eclectic practice stems from a desire, not only to make effective art, but also to understand how art functions in relation to its audience and creators. In contrast to previous performative or conceptual work, this collection is an attempt to engage with the direct process of drawing in order to communicate with the audience through a self-contained, clearly bounded object. The style is drawn from a well-developed journal process. Each piece in the main set represents a meditation on a particular theme, and engages with this theme through a mixture of drawing and script. Details of other work, current projects and state of practice can be found on the artist's Instagram. “With this project I wanted to examine the connection between the maker and the made, and I am doing so with my most direct and familiar medium. There is nothing in the way of the act of working: no stages; no drying time. It flows from my mind to the page. This allows me to lay down ideas as fast as they come, in any form I choose. Quite different from the design-like process necessitated by my other work. More intuitive.”
