Passionate about design, photography and writing, I set out to combine the three for my thesis project. From my dissertation written on the topic of the inner workings of the world of work, I embarked on an exploration of the workplace and how we use it. Documenting the way students used the facilities here in DJCAD through photography, I quickly identified problems that I wanted to solve. It's never been more imperative that things change than now, in light of the outbreak of COVID-19, for the world as we knew it is gone, perhaps forever. A world that had long forgotten the necessity of rest, that was fuelled by a constant need for instant gratification and limitless success to the detriment of our collective wellbeing. In response to this need for change, Our New World of Work is a flexible working environment that can be implemented into your chosen location, consisting of a kit of parts that can be combined differently to suit each situation. The main elements are a shelter that can be placed either indoors or outdoors and a work station that can be used standalone or within the pod, built to your specific needs. To allow sustained productivity throughout the working day, the time you are prompted to spend in the space is determined by how much you have walked in between tasks (logged through an app), encouraging a different mode of thinking as well as movement to promote emotional, physical and mental wellness.

In response to a need for change in a world that had long forgotten the necessity of rest to the detriment of our collective wellbeing, along with the effects of the Coronavirus outbreak on our day to day lives, ‘our new world of work’ is a flexible working environment that can be implemented into your chosen location. The main elements are a shelter that can be placed indoors or outdoors, and a work station that can be used within the pod, or standalone built to your specific needs from a kit of parts. To allow sustained productivity throughout the working day, the time you are prompted to spend in the space is determined by how much you have walked in between tasks (logged through an app), encouraging a different mode of thinking as well as exercise to promote emotional, physical and mental wellness. Informed by research evaluating the benefits of a cycle of divergent and convergent thinking to promote positive productivity habits, the design aims to encourage movement between these two types of thought processes throughout the working day. The pod features two large domed glass windows allowing natural light into the space, with the rest of the structure made from all natural materials. The wooden stations slot into a step below the seating, allowing the user to slot it in forwards and sit behind it, or turn it round and work at it while standing in the centre of the pod. This is my vision for our new world of work, where things are more balanced, more flexible and more sustainable in the long run for our overall health and wellbeing. I hope that the world that emerges from this pandemic is one that remembers the value of time, spent with our loved ones, doing the things we love instead of being slaves to the office and the ways in which it makes our jobs harder for us. I hope that we can design a better future for ourselves in which the workplace works with us instead of against us and where we learn to take better care of ourselves and each other.
