Lauren Swan

My work is largely inspired by my passion for nature, as well as mental health and personal well-being. I have loved working on my projects during the last year as I have been able to explore these topics in much greater detail, through my illustrations and ceramic works. Whales are magnificent creatures and I wanted to portray their natural beauty in as simple a way as possible. I sculpted these humpback whales using clay, which was then coloured using underglazes. Once fired in a kiln the whales were dipped in a clear glaze and fired once more. I think the glaze enhances the whale's natural form. The driftwood base was found upon St Andrews Beach, where I have many fond memories of looking out across the water and wondering what was below.
