Jewellery and Metal Design

Shirley Warnock-Lowe

REUSE/REPURPOSE/RESPECT
My designs are completely made from repurposed, recycled or biodegradable materials. The metal is Shibuichi, a Japanese alloy, which I have made and drawn down into wire to create my work. Using broken bottles as the ‘gem’ in the piece, I hope to draw people’s attention to the materials used, and not just the aesthetic of the finished piece. Alongside the materials, I have also reduced or replaced the chemicals used in the jewellery making process, reduce the waste created and sourced sustainable material sources. The yarn used is a cotton mix, natural and biodegradable, it is dyed using vegetable dye or tea stained. All dyes were hand-made by myself. My packaging and business cards are made from recycled cardboard boxes and laser etched. I wanted to show that the jewellery industry can be massively destructive, but it doesn’t have to be. Small changes can make a big difference to the environment, I hope that the changes I have made in my own practice can be used in a wider sense in the DJCAD workshop.
