Biography

Iain K Clark is a Solicitor Advocate and Partner and Head of Litigation & Dispute Resolution, at Gilson Gray LLP, Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. He is a highly motivated and proactive specialist litigator with a wealth of practical experience and knowledge gained over more than 20 years of conducting all types of private client and commercial litigation, arbitration, and mediations before the Courts and other Tribunals in Scotland, the UK and internationally.


As UK Winner of the ILO Client Choice Award 2013 for Arbitration and UK Winner of the ACQ Global Award 2013 for Leading Arbitration Lawyer of the Year, he is regularly instructed in relation to domestic and transnational disputes - to advise on and conduct complex and high value arbitrations, litigations and mediations in Scotland and internationally - including disputes in the engineering, construction, oil & gas, renewables, and property fields; and other general private client and commercial disputes.
Iain has particular expertise in International Arbitration, with a special interest in the Energy Sector. He has significant experience of conducting arbitrations under both institutional rules e.g. the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA); and Ad hoc Arbitrations e.g. under the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010, the English Arbitration Act 1996, and the Norwegian Arbitration Act 2004.


Admitted as a Solicitor Advocate (Civil), he has extended rights of audience to appear before the Sheriff Courts of Scotland, the Court of Session, and the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.


Iain also regularly advises on how to avoid disputes and how best to manage disputes, if they do arise, with the emphasis always being on finding solutions that work best for clients – and ever mindful of the practical realities of any given situation.
Iain was appointed an Honorary Lecturer, at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), at the University of Dundee in 2011.

He is a member of the Global Academic Faculty and Course Director there on Mediation and International Arbitration Issues. He was a coach to the award winning CEPMLP Mediation Team, who won an award at the 6th ICC Mediation Competition in Paris in February 2011. Iain is a Seminar Director/Lecturer on the Professional Seminar Training Programme of the Energy Studies Institute, National University of Singapore. He is also an Accredited Commercial Arbitrator and is a member of the Law Society of Scotland Specialist Accreditation Panel on Arbitration.


He is co-author, with Steven P Walker, Advocate and Barrister, of Pleading In Arbitration: A Practitioner's Guide, published by Sweet & Maxwell/Thomson Reuters in 2012.
