CEPMLP Visiting Speaker Series, 8th November

Obo Idornigie, Principal Analyst – Corporate Research at Wood Mackenzie and an alumnus of CEPMLP was the sixth Guest Speaker for the CEPMLP Visiting Speaker Series. He delivered a profound presentation on the topic: Global Upstream Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) and the Corporate Outlook.
During his presentation, Obo touched on the strategic drivers behind M&A, and enlightened his audience on the reasons why International Oil Companies do M&A and why they sell or buy assets. He also spoke on corporate drivers that will influence deal flows going forward. According to Obo, from a buyer’s perspective, the principal strategic objectives for acquiring an asset during the current low oil price environment are synergy, diversification and value creation. While from the perspective of the seller in the same context on low oil price environment, the strategic drivers behind selling of assets are: difficult financial situations, corporate decisions, etc.
After his presentation, Obo spent some time with the students of CEPMLP advising them on how to make the best of their time in University of Dundee by sharing his personal experiences with them.
The presentation was chaired by Dr Xiaoyi (Shawn) Mu, Reader in Energy Economics and MSc Programmes Lead at CEPMLP.
