The CEPMLP Visiting Speaker Series entered in to the penultimate week for this semester. The Centre was glad to welcome Bernhard Maier, pictured in the centre, an associate in Squire Patton Boggs’ International Dispute Resolution Practice Group. Bernhard Maier is qualified in both England and New York and has extensive experience working on investment treaty disputes, commercial arbitrations and a wide range of contentious and non-contentious public international law matters.
In his presentation titled ‘International Energy Law and the Role of an Energy Disputes Lawyer in the Sector’ Mr Maier discussed the role of an Energy Lawyer within the sector and more so in regards to the role played by lawyers in International Investment Disputes within the Energy and Mining Sector.
Mr Maier gave a valuable insight from his own experience working as a lawyer in the industry and the roles that he has played so far in his career in the cases his undertaken. In his presentation he highlighted the broad roles that an Energy Lawyer encompasses due to the nature of the industry. The presentation then went on to highlight the disputes which he has personally worked on between investors and States in relation to Tax, Boundary, Environmental, Regulatory and Mining issues. Mr Maier gave in insight to the process as to how a State or Investor decides the best route to resolve a dispute and the relevant mode of Establishment it chooses to take the dispute to in order to find a remedy based on a number of considerations.
