On 1st November, the fifth talk in the CEPMLP’s Visiting Speaker Series, Graham Coop, Partner of Volterra Fietta spoke on the topic of “Dispute Resolution Mechanisms under the Energy Charter Treaty”

Graham is a qualified barrister and solicitor in New Zealand; and a solicitor, with higher rights of audience (Civil), in England and Wales. He advises and represents companies, governments and international organisations on international dispute resolution and public international law, with a particular focus on the energy, natural resources and infrastructure sectors, together with environmental, banking and defence issues. Graham is recognised globally as one of the world’s leading experts on international energy law, the Energy Charter Treaty and international investment arbitration.

Graham gave an in-depth presentation on how the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) has shaped the energy industry. He also discussed settlement of disputes under the ECT, investment protection under the ECT, the relationship between the ECT and EU law, Brexit and the ECT and the International Energy Charter. Graham, in a response to a question related to Brexit, explained that Brexit had no effect on the UK’s relationship with the ECT.

He was hosted by Dr Sergei Vinogradov, a Senior Lecturer at CEPMLP and the Director of the PhD programme.
