DOLFIN Mourns the Loss of Director David Bishopp

The Dundee Ocean and Lake Frontiers Institute and Neutrals (DOLFIN), a CEPMLP interdisciplinary research unit, mourns the loss of David Julian Bishopp, who lost his battle with cancer last week.  Mr. Bishopp served as Industry Director since DOLFIN’s establishment earlier this year. An 'Alumni Insights' event was held for students of CEPMLP recently when we were delighted to welcome back Jairo Ching, Ekpen Omonbude and Jamal Hamidu. It is with deep regret that CEPMLP learned of the recent passing of Michael Johnson,  Teaching Fellow and Honorary Lecturer. Mike delivered a range of finance and accounting courses to the upstream oil industry for several training organisations and eight years part-time teaching in the School of Accountancy and Business Finance, University of Dundee, specialising in undergraduate management accountancy and business management and, later, postgraduate extractive industries accounting.  He also provided on-campus finance and accounting teaching support for CEPMLP, from 1998 to 2015.  More rec...

PhD student Erman Özgür delivered a paper in Brussels on 21 April at the Investment Group Meeting at the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels. This is a 73 page research paper on the Taxation Carve Out mechanism under Article 21 of the Energy Charter Treaty (which was subject to some controversial claims in the recent Yukos v. Russian Federation cases). Erman wrote the paper when he was a Research Fellow in Brussels between September-December 2014. A seminar on Transparency in the Extractive Industries took place in Buenos Aires on 14 April, organised by Universidad de San Martin and Dialogue Platform on Extractives, Development and Democracy. The seminar was supported by the British, Australian and Canadian Embassies and brought together international experts and members of the EITI working group in the UK, and local MPs, and the University of Bradford.  In March Dr Brian Howieson, Director of Management Programmes, visited South Africa, Mozambique, and Tanzania as part of the Scottish Enterprise Trade Mission to South and East Africa. The purpose of the Mission was to help with capacity development in the oil and gas sectors in Mozambique and Tanzania and to help develop the workforce of these countries. On March 11th, 2015 the SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) Dundee Chapter hosted the Petroquiz.  This event caught the attention of students from the University of Aberdeen, Heriot Watt University and Robert Gordon University.  There were 13 teams of two students competing for a cash prize of £300.  The runners up won £100.  CEPMLP was present with 3 teams, each one of two students: Alexandre Ferrafiat and Javier Matos; Peter Baillie and Dayle McLeod; and Doros Aresti and Niel Jacobs.
