The Centre is focussed on the implementation, interpretation and enforcement of laws which provide rights to information in Scotland and internationally.
We carry out research and activities related to the work of Information Commissioners and equivalent appellate bodies worldwide. Activities include:
• conducting international surveys of Information Commissioners
• participating in international access to information initiatives and events, such as the Open Government Partnership
• advising on the implementation and effectiveness of appellate mechanisms
• organising seminars and conferences
At a European level the Centre is particularly interested in the impact of the Aarhus Convention and the EC Directive on Access to Environmental Information, and in 2014 hosted a European Conference of Information Commissioners on that subject. We also ran a project to facilitate an Information Commissioners International Exchange Network, with the support of the Open Societies Foundation, from 2012 to 2014.
In Scotland, the Centre facilitates exchange between FoI practitioners within public authorities, the legal and academic community and civil society. Its successful seminar series has included international contributors from Canada, Ireland, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, and the USA.
