Today’s modern Royal Air Force is the UK’s aerial, peacekeeping and fighting force. It’s made up of impressive personnel from diverse backgrounds, working side-by-side to make a difference at home and abroad. When it comes to recruitment our focus is attracting the best personnel, and ensuring they’re well taken care of during and after their service in the RAF. Our primary role at home is to defend UK airspace. We do this through reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and cutting-edge technology that enable rapid responses. We may be a fighting force that provides flexible and specialized air power, but our role abroad includes more than that.

Around the globe, we help police the skies and support peacekeeping and reconstruction initiatives. It’s not always about our interests though. We provide humanitarian aid to victims of war and natural disasters, deliver life-saving shelters and food supplies, and even airlift people to safety. Our RAF personnel have worked tirelessly in disaster zones like the tsunami in Indonesia and earthquake in Pakistan. Whether they’re preventing a civil war, providing relief and aid to countries that need it most or thwarting terrorist actions, being a force for good is what our work is really about.

Offering advice and guidance on the wide range of job opportunities that exist in the Royal Air Force. This will include related literature and the opportunity to talk to serving personnel.

The University of St Andrews is the oldest University in Scotland and the 3rd oldest in the UK. Consistently ranked amongst the top-5 universities in the UK, St Andrews is renowned for its teaching excellence and the impressive range of research conducted by our staff.

We have 21 departments offering over 100 taught Masters programmes and all departments offer PhD level courses also.

Unusually for a UK university, approximately half of our 1,700 graduate students are typically involved in research-based courses of 2 or 3 years duration. The others are typically studying towards a taught Masters degree which normally takes one year to complete.

Most taught courses require 2 semesters of full-time study, followed by a period of research, which culminates in the submission of a dissertation of up to 15,000 words. Thus, a one year programme is normally 9 months of teaching followed by 3 months of supervised research and writing-up to finish.

Our PhD programmes are normally 3 years duration but the majority of candidates complete a preparatory year-long programme first. Prospective research students are advised to contact the department of interest in the first instance.
