Placements for students are core components of courses that lead to professional accreditation at the University of Dundee and are an important part of many of our teaching programmes. Professional courses are required to provide placements to students that meet the required learning outcomes set by the appropriate regulatory body and each School is also responsible for the quality assurance of these placements and ensuring student satisfaction.
Currently, placements are managed across a variety of systems including SITS, access databases and excel spreadsheets. While these meet the requirements for storing data, they're time-consuming and, apart from SITS, have limited reporting facilities. The drive towards the provision of placements for the majority of students requires a system that can manage the various aspects of placements and not simply record where a student has been.
As well as student data returns such as the mobility data return as part of HESA, there's a need for analytical reporting tools to assist with quality assurance as well as monitoring the benefit of placements on student satisfaction and employability.
We've procured an off-the-shelf solution that will standardise and improve the administrative process whilst improving the placement experience for our students. The objectives of the project are to implement and embed a system that:
- Manages all aspects of placements and not simply record where a student has been
- Provides analytical and reporting tools to assist with quality assurance
- Provides a way to monitor the benefit of placements on student satisfaction and employability
We’ve already been in touch with Schools with a view to establishing a common set of requirements, and will continue to engage with key people across the University as this project develops. For more information please contact Barry Stewart, BT Project Manager.
