Dundee's New Community Garden
Published on Tue 4 Jul 2017 by Lisa Campbell
Over the past year or so Dundee as a city has gone through some major changes including the waterfront area to create Slessor Gardens in preparation for the V&A Museum of Design, Dundee opening in 2018. Within this great new area that has recently been added to Dundee's charm there is a going to be a small patch of land used as a community garden which has been designed by the public for the public.
The University of Dundee's Botanic Garden have played a part in this process working with the University of Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Kennedytwaddle design studios, designer and lecturer Linsey McIntosh and landscape architect Glen McFarlane. We have all been working together to create workshops for the volunteers to help them gather the skills they need to design and create a wonderful garden.
The Volunteers involved in this project include people living with or recovering from a range of health and wellbeing issues. That is why Art Angel have been involved in this process as they are an organisation that already use creativity and art to support these people through their everyday lives. The project has shown improvement in the volunteers as they have maintained new or improved skills.
A huge thanks goes out to the Peoples Post Code Lottery for providing the funding for this project. If you want to take part as a volunteer over the summer to help plant in the community garden as part of the V&A Dundee Project please do not hesitate to get in touch it could be a great way for you to relax and unwind whilst meeting new local people.
