The law is changing. From 1 September 2016 you will need to be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on demand, including catch up TV, on BBC iPlayer. This applies to any device and provider you use.

For further details please see the TV Licencing website.

A limited cleaning service exists for shared stairwells and landing. It's you and your flatmates' responsibility to keep the kitchen and living room clean.

Council Tax

All full-time registered students at the University of Dundee will normally qualify for exemption from council tax. Please visit our web page about council tax for comprehensive information.

Tips for living in Residences

  • Be aware of the university discipline rules and the terms of your contract.
  • Get to know ALL your flatmates - they are going to be your 'family' for a long time.
  • Have a flat meeting as early as possible and agree on some ground rules - cleaning the flat, use of communal areas, dealing with noise, overnight guests etc.
  • Respect your fellow residents and look out for each other.
  • Living with others can be challenging, so be prepared to negotiate and compromise.
  • Get involved in your residence's social activities – it is up to you to make things happen.
  • Consider insuring your belongings in addition to the general insurance which covers you as a resident in University residences.
  • If you are experiencing difficulties or are worried about a fellow resident, we are here to help.
  • Get to know the staff (Sanctuary and Residences offices) who are looking after your accommodation, and learn how to contact them if needed.

Dealing with conflict

If you are having difficulties with flatmates, you could try to resolve the conflict on your own by speaking to them first. You don't have to do this before you contact us, but it might make things easier for you and your flatmates.
