Biography

Doreen initially planned to study Environmental Science at University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, however after her first semester she discovered her passion for immunology and switched to a Zoology degree, which she completed in 1979, graduating with first class honours. Following this, Doreen decided to pursue a PhD in Immunology in the Cancer Research Campaign Laboratories in Nottingham. After completing her PhD, she held two postdoctoral fellowships: one at Dartmouth College in the USA and one at the London Research Institute (LRI) of Cancer Research UK, where she would later establish her own research group in 1987.

Doreen married in 1978, during her second year of undergraduate studies, and has three daughters born in 1985, 1988 and 1991. She credits her husband with sharing equally the raising of their family.

It was in 2002 that Doreen moved to Dundee to pursue further career development and with the assistance of the Wellcome Trust, her research group has been able to achieve their goals.

In 2010 Doreen became Head of the College of Life Sciences and Vice-Principal of the University of Dundee. Today Doreen is Dean of School of Life Sciences and still runs her research group. Doreen has a number of external advisory roles. She is currently an MRC  council member, on the Board of Trustee for the  Crick Institute and the Babraham Research Institute and involved in numerous grant committees for the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society.
