09JanHow our Fear of Fat can make us Unhealthy - Cafe Science Extra
Morgan Windram-Geddes, University of Dundee Most people would agree that exercise is good for you and fat is bad for you. Weight loss through exercise or dieting are the modern prescriptions for health. But how is our young generation of women interpreting this message? Drawing on interviews with girls aged 11-14, this talk reveals how our beliefs about health are putting more and more girls 'off' doing sport or exercise and leading other girls to engage in 'unhealthy' practices in their eating and exercise habits. http://www.cafesciencedundee.co.uk/

10Jan"Women, Water & Wells" - Gil Garcetti Exhibition
In 2001 Gil Garcetti travelled to West Africa for the first of what would be several visits to the continent. Captivated by the land and the people, he became deeply committed to raising awareness of, and funds for, safe water in the region. Thus was born Women, Water and Wells, a selection of striking photographs. Garcetti’s rich black-and-white photographs reveal the critical link between water and health in West Africa, as well as the dramatic economic and public health outcomes that can be achieved when safe water is delivered to communities. The Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science would like to invite you to a short talk about the collection on Thursday 10th January 2013 at 4.30pm in the University of Dundee Dalhousie Building. The collection will be officially opened at 6.00pm by University Principal Professor Pete Downes and followed by refreshments. RSVP to Hugh Gunn - h.j.b.gunn@dundee.ac.uk or telephone 01382 385871

Saturday Evening Lecture Series 2013 Michael Goldfarb: What is a Nation?
Saturday 19 January 2013, 6pm - Dalhousie Building - University of Dundee - DD1 5EN For two decades Michael Goldfarb covered conflicts in the Balkans, the Middle East and Northern Ireland that had at their core people's frustrated sense of nationhood. As Scots debate their national status in earnest, he looks back at the lessons he learned covering these wars and asks whether the nationalism of the 19th and 20th centuries will meet people's needs in the 21st. SELS is pleased to partner this lecture with Five Million Questions, a knowledge exchange programme engaging the wider public on their questions and seeking to inform the debate on the referendum on Scottish independence and its consequences. A wine reception will follow the lecture. Please note overflow theatres may be in use. Tickets and more infor from dundee.ac.uk/tickets, events@dundee.ac.uk or 01382 385564
