Why study at Dundee?
Women in Dundee
Historically, women have played an important role in the development of Dundee. As a result, the city has long been known as a 'women's town'.
University College, Dundee, the predecessor of Dundee University, owes its foundation in 1881 to the principal benefactor, Mary Ann Baxter. At her insistence a central clause in the Deed of Incorporation stated that it should be
'a college for promoting the education of persons OF BOTH SEXES
and the study of science, literature and fine arts'.
It was at Dundee that a woman was first appointed to a professorial chair in a Scottish university. Professor Margaret Fairlie (1891-1963) held the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1940 until her retirement in 1956.
