MLitt or Diploma Course Content

Gender, Culture and Society is a dedicated pathway in the Humanities postgraduate programme.

All GCS students take an interdisciplinary core course (Approaches to Gender, Culture and Society) which is taught by the GCS core team. Currently this course focuses on Gender and War and on Women, Representation and Self-Representation but specific themes may vary from year to year. Past themes have included Women, Death and Spirituality; Gender, the Public Sphere and Work; Women and the Visual Arts.

Modules

GCS students also follow a taught option relevant to the field of gender and women's studies selected from the modules available in the MLitt Humanities programme. Options currently available include:

Together with other Humanities postgraduate students, GCS students take courses in Generic Skills and a research skills module relevant to their intended dissertation topic.

Dissertation

Students on the GCS MLitt also write a dissertation on a subject of their choice related to the GCS programme. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of primary source material and to draw on contemporary theoretical approaches as well as visual images and/or cultural artefacts.
