Rice, Water and Climate Change: Drama in Vietnam?
Mr. Vu Cong Lan from the National Institute of Agricultural Planning and Projection (NIAPP, a partner on the LiveDiverse project), Hanoi, delivered a talk on Wednesday 8th June 2011 on the subject of "Strategies related to the sustainable development and management of the Red River Delta, Vietnam". The IHP-HELP Centre co-hosted this event with CECHR.This talk took a hard look at the dynamic of water and land, rice production and food security, sustainable development and climate change in the Red River Delta Vietnam is the second largest rice producer in the world, and the Red River, together with the Mekong delta, are the main rice producing areas. Any sizeable reductions in regional rice production, e.g. driven by changing hydrology, are likely to have a big impact on the price of rice everywhere. As rice represents 20% of the world's per capita caloric consumption and over half of the world's population is dependent upon rice for 80% or more of its diet (source) any price hikes for this foodstuff will be highly disruptive effect very negatively on billions of people worldwide.
The event was well-attended and the Q&A session both lively and informed.
