Research

Andrew is currently working on three major research projects, all funded through the EU’s 7th Framework Programme:

  1. In project “ACQWA” he is Joint Coordiator (with Nacho Lopez Moreno of the CISC in Zaragoza) of the socio-economic inputs into the project from its 16 partner agencies.  The IHP-HELP Centre is contributing an assessment of the effectiveness of legal regimes in the various case study areas (the Rhone in Switzerland, Aconcagua in Chile and Tien Shien in Kyrgzatan), taking into account the socio-economic impact of climate change-induced glacial melting.
  2. In the GENESIS project, Andrew is leading the IHP-HELP Centre team that is assessing the extent to which the implementation of the Groundwater Directive in the EU has been effective in its aims. The team is currently developing a methodology to do this in conjunction with Work Programme partners across Europe, using a number of case study acquifers: the Rokusa Eskers in Finland, Mancha Oriental in Spain, and the Czestochowa in Poland.
  3. In the LiveDiverse project, Andrew works as part of the legal team assessing the barriers to the implementation of national and international legal regime in relation to protected areas.  Disciplinary and sectoral integration is effected by Andrew and colleagues in the context of scenario development, building on experience gained in other recent EU-funded projects (BRAHMATWINN and STRIVER).
