Bjørn-Oliver Magsig is a PhD candidate focusing on how international law can contribute to global water security. His research critically assesses the current legal regime of transboundary watercourses against the backdrop of global security and instability, thus contributing to the evolving body of international water law. Holding a diploma in Business and Environmental Law (University of Applied Sciences Trier, UC Birkenfeld, Germany), his research background is in environmental law and policy for natural resources and energy. Bjørn-Oliver received the CEPMLP Environmental Law Bursary to commence his LLM in Environmental Law & Policy with the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee, which he completed with Distinction. His project work on transboundary river basins drew his interest to the looming water crisis and its detrimental impact on socio-economic development and the environment and he was granted a PhD scholarship to study the role of international law in this subject area. Bjørn-Oliver is a member of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law and the International Law Association (ILA). Besides water security, his current research interests include international environmental law, global environmental change and hydropolitics.
