About: Featured Research from our Network (FRETWORK)

"Fretwork", as a word in the English language, means an ornamental work consisting of three-dimensional geometric figures; this makes a great metaphor since the conversations and knowledge exchange that we aim to support will themselves be three-dimensional, consisting of our own work, the work of our partners and, of course, interactions with visitors to our FRETWORK webpages.  The word "fretwork" can also allude to the playing of a guitar - and the image above does, if you look at it the right way, look akin to a guitar's neck I think.

We invite anyone interested in FRETWORK, or any other aspect of our work, to join the online discussions taking place at our dedicated LinkedIn Group, which already has nearly 500 members and a lively range of current, topical discussions.

FRETWORK does not exist in isolation; we have a lively tradition of debate at the IHP-HELP Centre, for example conducted through our LinkedIn Group. As an example of a recent (December 2010) research debate, do you agree with the Philippe Sands QC when he states as his first conclusion of his paper "Water and international law: science and evidence in international litigation" that, "a first point is that international cases are never won or lost on legal argument alone. The scientific and technical issues, including the manner in which expert evidence is presented, are closely connected to outcome"?  This is a very pertinent question for our own Centre, combining as it does the disciplines of water law, policy and science; full text available via the publisher, Lawtext who have also provided a useful introduction to the Water and international law: science and evidence in international litigation article.

Also, the IHP-HELP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science has a wealth of research publications.  These are searchable online and are an invaluable resource; however, we are also aware that:
