Law (including Law with Languages)

LLB

Dundee is the only law school in the UK to offer two fully qualifying law degrees for the legal profession either in Scotland or in England and Wales, and Northern Ireland. We also offer a dual qualifying degree in both Scots and English Law.

Why study Law at Dundee?

Dundee is a truly unique law school. We offer a modern, forward looking approach to learning and a rigorous preparation for the professional world, whether in the legal sphere or elsewhere.

We offer two fully qualifying law degrees for the legal profession either in Scotland or in England and Wales, and Northern Ireland. Dundee is the only law school in the UK to offer this choice.

For students on the Scots stream of the LLB at Dundee, there is also a unique and intellectually demanding option to achieve dual qualification. On graduating with this degree, students have a choice of jurisdictions where they can study for their postgraduate professional qualification, giving our graduates a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Dundee Mooting Society

A moot is a legal debate and the Dundee Mooting Society is one of the most successful in the UK. The Society runs training and internal competitions for students and teams from Dundee compete in most of the major mooting competitions in the UK and internationally.

Facilities

The Law Library is housed within the same building as the School, and has a large collection of material for all jurisdictions in the UK, including EC material, as well as considerable holdings of overseas material. The Law Library, like the Main University Library, is fully adapted for wireless communications, houses an IT suite and offers a wide range of electronic resources including access to many important legal databases.

Chris Browne, from Belfast, graduated in 2010 with LLB English Law and was recently elected as Deputy President of the Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA). He says, "The best thing about English Law at Dundee is the high quality of teaching and academic supervision. There are some really eminent lecturers and professors and it is a unique opportunity to have one of these individuals supervise your dissertation."

Teaching & Assessment

With an intake of only 140 at Level 1, Dundee Law School staff take a personal and supportive interest in their students. A strong emphasis is placed on staff accessibility and on small group teaching involving all their senior staff.

How you will be taught

Our approach is intended to be both innovative and progressive with a changing emphasis as the student advances through the levels of the degree programme:

  • At Levels 1 and 2, teaching consists of a balance between lectures supported by small group teaching in tutorials and independent and group study.
  • At Levels 3 and 4 a greater proportion of coursework is conducted independently and classes take the form of seminar discussion.
  • Half the coursework at Level 4 involves preparation and presentation of the dissertation, a substantial work of independent, but supervised and supported research on an elective topic.

What you will study - Scots Law and English Law (accelerated degree)

The Accelerated degree is a two-year programme for graduates from other disciplines. Please visit the Dundee Law School website for more information on the modules you study each year.

How you will be assessed

The form of assessment varies between modules. Presentations may be used to evaluate oral communication of reasoned legal argument and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Moots may be used to assess court room manner and the ability to argue interactively.

Some modules are assessed by essay or drafting exercises while others involve tests on the comprehension and interpretation of legal sources such as Acts of Parliament or case reports. In no module does assessment depend solely on a final exam.

A small number of modules are continuously assessed; in the majority of modules the weighting of assessment is 25% for coursework and 75% for the final assessment.

Careers

We have close links with employers and we offer programmes to support and develop the employability of our students. Our good reputation throughout the profession and close links to employers help Dundee graduates find employment.

While many students study law in order to qualify to practise, the skills acquired in a law degree are also attractive to many prospective employers and the LLB is an ideal basis for a career in professions such as:

  • the Police
  • Banking
  • Journalism
  • Management
  • Civil service

For those that do want to enter the legal profession, our Diploma in Legal Practice, which as of 2011 is known as PEAT 1, has an excellent record of graduate employment across the UK and is taught by practicing solicitors.

A number of graduates go on to undertake postgraduate degrees within the School in areas such as commercial, international, human rights and environmental law.

International Applicants

We have information specifically for international applicants on our International website:

What skills, qualities and experience do I need?

While study at undergraduate level will place demands on the individual over and above those encountered at school, degree studies in law are demanding from the outset. A high level of motivation is therefore an essential attribute of the successful law student. Students should be committed, not necessarily to a career in law, but certainly to undertake and become fully involved in legal study. Vital attributes include: skills in written and oral communication; precision; an inquiring mind and a willingness to engage in critical thought and reasoned analysis. The most suitable applicants are likely to possess a lively imagination and an interest in current affairs. A love of reading is a distinct advantage!

Tips for your application

Spend some time on your personal statement. It should explain your interest in the subject and how you possess the skills set out above. Highlight activities which show some commitment and where you have had responsibilities. These may be work experience, a sports team, volunteer work or school and family commitments. Make sure it is well structured and well written.

If you do not obtain your grades on your first attempt of a Higher or A-Level, it is not advisable to re-take that course. We ask for higher marks for subjects taken a second time. Instead take a new Higher or A-Level.
