The Student Support team led by the Student Support Worker, Dr Iliyan Stefanov, and assisted by the Environment & Sustainability Officer, Mrs Trudy Cunningham, has introduced a recycling scheme in the University Residences.
The initiative has further support from the Peer Connections Co-ordinator, Mrs Joan Muszynski and her team of Peer Connectors, DUSA, Sanctuary Management, PLUS@Dundee and the Chaplaincy team.
The Scheme was launched during the 2009-2010 academic year and was a major success story during the Welcoming Week, when new students were invited to collect items left for recycling by the previous year students, saving them money and time.
Under the Re-Use Scheme, students residing in University Residences are invited to donate unwanted items (kitchen stuff, clothing, duvets, tinned/unopened food etc.) instead of discarding of them after the end of the academic year. Residents who are leaving the Residences can bring such items to the Re-cycle & Re-use Collection Points set in every University Residence. Items are then sorted, cleaned and stored for the summer. When the new students come in September, the are offered to take for free all that has been collected on a first come-first serve basis.
Some items which were donated, we could not re-use, so clothing went to Rag Bag Scheme to be sent abroad, duvets went to dog shelters and unopened food to charities.
Mr Arthur Wright, then second year Environmental Science student, and Mr Kristaps Bezbailis, then second year Business Management student, have worked with our Support Team as internships to further develop our Recycling & Re-Use Scheme. The results of their work have already been implemented and will help make the Re-cycle & Re-use Scheme even more easy to use. Check out our Facebookpage to find out more.
If any one is interested to continue what Arthur and Kristaps have started as interns and help promote and develop the Scheme, please contact Dr Iliyan Stefanov (see contact details below)
