Child Tax Credits

All students with children can apply for Child Tax Credits via Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Students who are lone parents can apply for Income Support over the summer vacation period (late June to early September).

Given that state benefits are a complex issue, you are advised to contact the Student Funding Officer who can offer specific advice on your situation.

New regulations for tax credits mean that you may continue to receive full Child Tax Credits for the remainder of the tax year in which you graduate.

Example:

• Clarissa has two children who attend After School Clubs. During the final year of her degree, Clarissa received the full Child Tax Credit allowance and support for her childcare costs from the University.
• Clarissa graduates in June and starts a job on 1st July earning £20,000 per annum. Clarissa can continue to receive her full Child Tax Credit allowance as the £20,000 is disregarded within the current tax year. As she is working more than 16 hours per week and continues to pay for After School costs, she can also apply for Working Tax Credit and help with her childcare costs.
• In April of the next year, Clarissa's Child Tax Credit award for the new tax year will then be calculated based on her employment income.
