The University of Dundee disburses both the Higher Education Discretionary Fund (formerly the Higher Education Hardship Fund) and the Higher Education Childcare Fund, both of which are commonly referred to as Discretionary Funds.
If you have applied for the maximum student loan available to you, via your British Funding Authority, then you are eligible to apply for the Discretionary Funds. UK Postgraduate students can also apply if in financial difficulty.
Part-time students - you are eligible to apply for Discretionary Funds if you meet the SAAS residence criteria and are studying a course as part of a degree programme.
All lone parents wanting to apply for the Lone Parent Childcare Grant (LPCG) need to complete an application form for the Discretionary Funds below and must have their Lone Parent Grant (LPG) showing on their SAAS Letter of Award before applying to us.
Students studying undergraduate degrees with registered childcare costs can apply to the Higher Education Childcare Fund for assistance with childcare costs. If students are in receipt of the child-care element of Working Tax Credit, the University will expect the student to maximise that entitlement before considering an application to the Higher Education Childcare Fund.

Student Funding will try to process your application within 10 working days of receipt of your complete form. During busy periods this may not be possible, although we will still try to process your application as quickly as we can.
The University of Dundee Panel for Financial Aid meets weekly during semester time to discuss applications, and this body comprises of the Student Funding Officer, the Student Funding Advice Worker, and the DUSA Student President (or representative).

In certain circumstances, we are able to offer students 'emergency' assistance, generally in the form of a short-term loan. If you are in such a position, please download an application form for Short-term financial assistance, complete it, and bring it into our offices with the relevant paperwork. Forms can also be picked up from our offices.
An emergency application must be submitted before 12 noon on a working day. You must then come back between 11 am and 12 noon the next working day to find out the decision - we need 24 hours to process an emergency application.

Students from out-with the UK are not eligibe to apply to the Discretionary Funds as directed by the Scottish Government. However, any University of Dundee student experiencing financial difficulty is encouraged to contact the Student Funding Unit for further advice.
