Tay Mills

Tay Mills, is leased to the University from a private company. The University agrees to manage the property, allocate residents to rooms, collect rent and liaise with the owners regarding repairs. Tay Mills is located in a developing area of Dundee and is within 3 minutes walk of the main campus. The tall building, previously one of the longest textile mills in Britain was redeveloped in 1986 and now accommodates private businesses on the ground level and 202 residents on the 4 upper floors (please be aware that there is no lift in the property). There is a security door entry system into the building. Each simply furnished flat comprises 3, 4 or 5 bedrooms for single occupancy, kitchen, bath/shower (shower units only in flats 1, 8 and 15) and separate toilet. Heating is by means of electric storage heater in kitchens and electric convector heater in bedrooms. The property is ‘listed’ in terms of building regulations which necessitated shared external windows and on the top floor, bedroom and kitchen windows are positioned in the roof. Dundee City Council has granted this property a licence to operate as a "House in Multiple Occupation".

Information

Smoking Smoking is prohibited in all student residences including bedrooms.
Bedroom Each bedroom has a bed with mattress, desk, chair, wardrobe, and bookshelf.
Kitchen Each flat has its own kitchen with cooker, microwave, kettle, fridge/freezer and dining area.
Cleaning A limited service is provided, focusing on communal stairwell areas. Within the flats, each resident is responsible for ensuring that their flat and bedroom is kept to a reasonable level of cleanliness and to follow instructions given by the Management in regard to cleanliness. Bedrooms will be inspected periodically. A vacuum cleaner is available in each flat for residents use.
Telephones A coin operated telephone, allowing out-going calls only, is located on the second floor of each of the 3 stairwells leading to flats, Stairwell A (flats 1 - 21), Stairwell B (flats 22 - 36) & Stairwell C (flats 37 - 50).
Laundry A coin-operated laundry is available on site. An iron and ironing table is available in each flat.
Computer Connections There is no University network provision within Tay Mills.
Car Parking Tay Mills car parking is owned by 'Unite' who have an administration office on site. Their current charge for resident car parking is £8.00 per week (under review). For further information contact Unite Reception at 21 Brown Street, Dundee (tel 01382 322650).
What you will need to bring with you Duvet & duvet cover, bed sheet, pillow & pillow cover (Bedding Starter Pack can be purchased on arrival, subject to availability); dishes, cutlery, pots and cooking utensils, personal washing materials and towels; dish cloth and cleaning materials; clothes hangers; headphones for radios/stereo equipment; a television licence if you intend to use a television within your room or flat.
GP Registration (Doctor) You are advised to ask your home doctor to write a letter about any prolonged drug treatment or illness, from which you suffer, for your doctor in Dundee. Details about registering with a local doctor can be found on the Health Service website: GP Registration
