Registering with a local doctor

Have you signed up with a local doctor (GP) yet?

All students are required to register with a local general practitioner or GP. This should be done as soon as possible after your arrival in Dundee. You may not expect to get ill and probably won't, but don't create a problem for yourself.

The University Health Service does not cover out of hours or emergency services.

How to Register with a GP

• A list is available at - Dundee GPs
  or NHS 24 - Tel 08454 24 24 24, NHS 24 if you are living outside of the Dundee area
• When you have chosen a GP just go in and ask to register, you may be given an appointment. Please take three forms of identification:
  • a passport
  • matriculation card
  • and documentation with your dundee address on it
• If you are given an appointment and do not attend your registration may be cancelled
• The services are free for you and your family. Prescribed drugs are currently free in Scotland.
• Specialists can only be accessed via your local GP, you cannot access them directly

Why register?

• Treatments, advice and health promotion are available at all doctors' health services or medical centres.
• The University Health Service does not cover out of hours and emergencies. If you have not registered with a local doctor you will not be covered in these situations.
• All specialist treatments can only be accessed by referral through your local doctor.

How to pay for treatment

All students have to pay for dental and optical treatment unless you are under 19 years old.
If you have a very low income you may be able to receive help with costs.

International Students

All International Students in full-time education in Scotland are eligible for free health care from the National Health Service, whatever the length of their studies.

This includes spouses and dependant children. Although health care is free, you will have to pay for dental and optical treatment as above.
