St Andrews - 30 minutes by bus
The world's most famous golf course is a park on a Sunday, open for all to walk, play frisbee, etc. It is said that the course being closed on Sundays was part of the towns peoples' agreement to allow the land to be used for the golf course, as they needed somewhere to hang their washing to dry on Sundays!
From here you can't miss the glorious West Sands made famous by the film Chariots of Fire. Surfing takes place here - in the North Sea!
You can also wander along the Scores, hop across to have a look at the castle and on to the cathedral before enjoying a walk around town and indulging in one of the many coffee shops, pubs and restaurants.
Arbroath -less than 20 minutes by bus
Where independence from England was declared with the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320. It was also the heartland of the Picts 2000 years ago and much sought after in battle between the Scots and the English.
Take a wander around the streets of old fisherman's cottages around the harbour.
Don't forget to sample the famous Arbroath Smokie.

Well preserved example of an iron age souterrain or earth house.
Historic ScotlandAlyth -45 minutes by bus
The picturesque ancient town developed around the cattle droving roads and the cloth trade. The Alyth Arches stand on the site of the 6th century St Molagg's church.
Visit the Museum for free from May - September and learn all about the area.
AlythTentsmuir Forest and Nature Reserve -less than 15 minutes by bus
Miles of golden sand and acres of forest, Tentsmuir is truly stunning.
If you have a bike you can cycle here in about 30 minutes and then enjoy the forest trails.
If you do go by bus you can do a circular walk along the beach and come back through the forest. Make it all the way to the South East end of the beach and you will be rewarded by great views across to St Andrews. You will also be at the end of Leuchars RAF base runway.
Bring binoculars if you can and you'll see the huge grey seals lounging on the sandbanks plus a fantastic selection of birds.
