Information for Staff
There are two ways for staff to access counselling:
- Through Recourse, Supporting Education Professionals, a service which offers free telephone counselling to staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can be contacted on 0808 802 0304.
- Through the University Counselling Service. Last year 64 staff members made use of the Service to explore a wide range of issues, often related to personal life, and to look at ways of managing their lives with greater effectiveness.
Counselling is an invaluable way of getting a new perspective on problems that are causing distress, whether it's a relatively recent worry or something that's been on your mind for a while. It's an excellent means of reducing the stress that inevitably builds up if you're sitting on something because you don't have an opportunity to discuss it with anyone.
Features of our services
The counsellors abide by the ethical framework and practice promoted by the British Association for Counselling. Important features of the Service include:
- Availability - The Service is available to all members of staff - clerical, manual, academic, academic-related etc and we can offer a maximum of 6 sessions within a 12 month period.
- Confidentiality - It's confidential: everything that is discussed and explored in the counselling session is treated with the strictest confidence. We have a code of confidentiality that is readily available on request.
- Privacy - The office has a pleasant, discrete environment in a converted tenement building, away from the bustle of the main administrative buildings.
- Independence - It's totally independent: we are not attached to any department or administrative area of the University.
- Accessibility - It's easily accessible: we are located in the middle of the main campus opposite the Main Library.
- Free - There is no charge.
Providing support
We are also available to offer advice, guidance and support to staff who have a welfare role with others. This consultancy service is of particular relevance to personal tutors, residences staff and others who have concerns about a student, and to members of staff who may be concerned about colleagues.
Contact us to talk over your concerns if you are unsure how to support a student or colleague in difficulty.
We also publish Guidelines for Staff on the referral of students to the Counselling Service. Copies are also available from the Counselling Service Office.
