D'Arcy Thompson award for Public Engagement with Research

How to Apply

Revealing Research and the College of Art, Science and Engineering at the University of Dundee are pleased to announce details of the 2012 D'Arcy Thompson award for Excellence in Public Engagement with the College's research.

Now being awarded for the second time, this award recognises the work of outstanding communicators at the College of Art, Science and Engineering towards improving understanding of the research and practice of the College and University to a wider audience.

The recipient/s will receive a certificate of recognition and prize money of £500 that they can use towards their future public activities.

It rewards those who have volunteered their own time to represent the College to public audiences. This award is a measure of how strongly public outreach is supported at both University and College levels at the University of Dundee.

D'Arcy Thompson laid the foundations of mathematical biology during his 64 years at the University of Dundee

The prize is strongly supported by College Secretary, Ilona Mair. Who said of the award

"Community outreach is an important element of our activities in CASE, from hosting the Strathmore Trophy each June to regular activities organised for secondary schools and the public.

The D'Arcy Thompson Award for Public Engagement, is a terrific opportunity to acknowledge and reward the efforts of our academic staff and research students in continuing to bring research and practice to our local community."

It recognises an individual or group for work such as hosting school visits, talks and other public events or through publishing and broadcasting.

We encourage nominations that detail the breadth and depth of research performed at the College of Art, Science and Engineering.

Previous winners

In 2010 both Dr. Maria Ana Cataluna and Dr. David Rodley from the School of Engineering, Maths and Physics were separately awarded the first D'Arcy Thompson prizes for Public Engagement with Research. The judging panel felt that it simply could not separate the outstanding achievements of the two.
