KTP - Knowledge Transfer Partnership

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is a DTI / Scottish Executive sponsored initiative where Universities can apply their expertise to business problems to enhance company performance and competitiveness. KTPs have been highly successful where a business wishes to introduce new skills or innovative practices into its operations.

Examples of these can be found at: www.ktponline.org.uk

The University of Dundee is keen to encourage companies to contact the Tayside KTP Centre (which also covers expertise at the University of Abertay and the Scottish Crop Research Institute).

What does a KTP involve?

Essentially a KTP means that a company can take on an employee to work on a specific project. This 'Associate', usually a recent graduate, is actively supported by a University supervisor. In the process, research staff are able to enhance the business relevance of their teaching and research.

How much does this cost ?

The cost of the project, which can run from 18 months to 3 years, is met by the DTI and by the company.  The University can claim for supervisory time (typically one half day per week) to pay for replacement teaching cover, travel etc.
