Matriculation is the formal process of registration with the University. In order to undertake a programme of study, and to continue to be enrolled as a student, you must matriculate for each year of your programme, and this includes periods for writing up dissertations or theses. Matriculation takes place at the beginning of each academic year in September (certain programmes start in January) and continuing students are contacted in late August/early September about the process. Students should complete the matriculation process and pay any due fees as quickly as possible.
New students beginning their programme of study at the start of an academic session in September are required to attend at the Bonar Hall where admission requirements are verified. Students should also bring any qualification certificates for verification.
New students beginning their programme of study at the start of an academic session in January are required to attend at the Dalhousie Building where admission requirements are verified. All students must bring proof of identity, e.g. your birth certificate, driving license or passport. If born outside the UK you must bring your passport and a valid visa. Students should also bring any qualification certificates for verification.
Irrespective of the time of year that you first matriculated, you must matriculate at the start of every subsequent session, i.e. in September.
You will need software capable of reading Adobe's PDF file format to view the following files. If required you may want to install Adobe Reader.

If you are unable to matriculate during the set times, you should request permission to matriculate late from the Student Records Officer. If you do not, then a Late Matriculation Fee of £70 will normally be payable.
Please note: students requiring visas to come to the UK must obtain a student visa. Prospective students who possess only a visitor's visa will not be permitted to matriculate. For further information see Points Based Immigration System
Overseas research students and some taught postgraduate students in science and engineering subjects will also require ATAS security clearance before they can obtain a visa. Please see: www.fco.gov.uk/atas
A matriculation fee of currently £100 is payable in lieu of tuition fees for any academic session or part thereof in which tuition fees are not payable. This fee allows you to remain a matriculated student and access University facilities until the final submission of coursework and/or dissertations or theses. It is typically, but not exclusively, paid by full-time PhD students in their fourth and subsequent years and by full-time taught masters students who require a second or subsequent year to complete their degree.
Please remember that students funded by SAAS or the Student Loan Company MUST apply each year for the payment of tuition fees for the following year. Application information and details of deadlines are available at SAAS or SLC
The matriculation process is all carried out once you arrive at the University. However, in order for you to receive your ID card at matriculation, you must provide us with a passport-sized photograph. Please see enclosed form in your admission pack.
Students with mobility or serious visual problems should ignore the queue for matriculation and should ask for the Matriculation Officer on arrival at Bonar Hall.
