It is not uncommon for some students to get into financial difficulties and so it is important that you know the University’s policy on debt. We would encourage you to plan your finances very carefully before beginning your studies. The University is aware of the financial difficulties facing you and is sympathetic to students and their problems. Nevertheless, it is not in your, or the University’s interest, for you to fall into debt.
Universities, like other institutions, have to balance income and expenditure carefully to ensure financial stability. You are expected to act responsibly in managing your finances and, if for whatever reason, you get into debt to the University, please, whatever you do, do not ignore letters sent to you. The consequences of getting into debt are serious. If you fall into debt to the University and it is considered that you will be unable to get out of debt, the outcome may be that you will have to leave.
It is therefore very important that if you find you are experiencing financial difficulties, you talk it over with a member of Student Services or other member of staff. It might be possible to make some special arrangements to assist you.
