1.1 This Code has been compiled for the guidance of those concerned with the supervision and examination of all postgraduate research students and does not purport to supersede or in any way modify the provisions of any Ordinance or Regulation of the University. This Code is also to be used by research degree students as a guide to what they can expect from the programme and to what the University expects of its research degree students. Regulations in respect of Higher Degree Courses are provided in the University Calendar, available online at www.somis.dundee.ac.uk/calendar/. These Regulations include sections on Admission of Research Students, Maximum Periods of Postgraduate Study, PhD Regulations, MPhil Regulations, Form and Presentation of Theses for Higher Degrees and the Postgraduate Appeals Procedure.
1.2 The University's Postgraduate Affairs Sub-Committee is the University body concerned with the assurance of quality of all research degree programmes across the University. It is also the body which maintains this Code of Practice. Its membership currently comprises staff representatives from each College and student representation from DUSA. The Postgraduate Affairs Sub-Committee reports to the Learning and Teaching Committee, and thence to Senate.
1.3 On a regular basis, and no less frequently than every five years, the Postgraduate Affairs Sub-Committee conducts a review of the regulatory framework for research degree programmes and a review of this Code of Practice. This review includes a survey of each College and School's procedures, to ensure that the guidelines contained in this Code of Practice are being complied with. The last such review was carried out in academic session 2010/11.
1.4 While this Code reflects the agreed policy at the time of publication, the latest version may be obtained from the University's website at http://www.dundee.ac.uk/qaf/qaresearchdegreesoverview.htm/.
