Biography

I am a postdoctoral research fellow working with Dr Ben Tatler and Professor Alan Kennedy in the School of Psychology. Since 2006 we have been working on several projects looking at how viewers process spatial and visual properties of objects in moving images, by examining people’s eye movements and memory performance when viewing movies. Currently, we are trying to understand why the spatial coding of object position in moving images is relatively poor, compared to that in static scene viewing or natural behaviour.

I originally come from Nagoya, Japan, and came to the UK in 1997. I did my undergraduate degree at University of St Andrews, and obtained my PhD in Psychology from University of Stirling in 2006 (Supervisor: Professor Peter Hancock).

Research Interest

My main research interest is understanding how people encode and retain information from watching moving images, and how the process compares to that of static scene viewing or natural behaviour. I am especially interested in understanding how people code position information in moving images, and what factors may improve/hinder the spatial coding of object position in movies.

Previously, I was involved in research looking at how people process own and other race faces, examining the so-called the own-race bias in face perception. I became interested in race and face perception while doing my undergraduate degree at University of St Andrews, where I worked as an undergraduate research assistant at the Perception Lab led by Professor Dave Perrett. I pursued my interests and obtained my PhD in Psychology from University of Stirling, examining the influence of facial expression and identity information on the processing of own and other race faces.
