Scholarship for International Students at the University of Dundee

photo of Chevenning Scholarship Winners Four international students studying at the University of Dundee have been awarded £18,000 each to help with their tuition fees and living expenses while studying for a Masters of Law degree at the Centre of Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).

Rinat Begaliyev (Kazakhstan), Ernesto Correa (Chile), Rogerio Miranda (Brazil) and Augusto Ruiz (Peru) are this year's winners of the prestigious Tripartite Chevening Scholarships whose contributors are: Rio Tinto plc (a world leader in the mining industry), The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the department of CEPMLP.

Rio Tinto plc chose the scholars from CEPMLP's nominees and was particularly impressed with the excellent standard of applicants.

Kathleen Shortt, Academic Administrator, CEPMLP explained: "Rio Tinto has been sponsoring CEPMLP students since 1995 and, to date, 25 students have been sponsored for the Master of Laws (LLM) degree from countries including Hungary, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Colombia, Canada. Rio Tinto plc chooses students from countries in which the Company has interests, their principal business is mining and mining-related activities which they undertake in many parts of the world."

This year's recipients met Sarah Kesby, Corporate Relations Advisor at Rio Tinto plc. Sarah is currently arranging for the scholars to make a trip to London to meet Mr Charles Lawton, the Legal Adviser, and the person responsible for deciding on the awards.

In choosing the winners Charles Lawton said: " The excellent standard of applicants this year clearly demonstrates that the Centre is achieving success in raising the general standards of students."

Apart from the monetary value of the Scholarship, which covers all tuition fees and living expenses for one year, the Rio Tinto scholars have the opportunity to forge links with this major Company; they have the opportunity to find out more about the Company's operations, and to network with former Rio Tinto scholars through the alumni scheme set up between Rio Tinto plc and CEPMLP.
