The new rector of Dundee University, former diplomat Craig Murray, used his installation address yesterday to fire a series of warning shots across the bows of the university administration on the way they treat students, as well as green and other issues.

Scientists have been awarded £1.3million to develop new drugs to combat a painful skin condition, it was announced yesterday. The grant from the Medical Research Council will fund three new research posts at Dundee and St Andrews universities to tackle eczema.

Search for missing man's body begins
Police investigating the disappearance eight years ago of motorcyclist Adam Alexander began preparations to excavate in a field near Errol yesterday. A police spokeswoman said officers had enlisted Professor Sue Black, a professor of anatomy and forensic anthropology, to help with the investigation.

Researcher gets award from Dundee
A Leading computer researcher has been awarded a prestigious grant to become a visiting professor at Dundee University. Vicki Hanson, one of the world's leading researchers on computing technologies for older and disabled people, has been awarded the Leverhulme Trust grant to become a visiting professor.

New rector in further controversy
Craig Murray will be officially installed as rector of Dundee University tomorrow - with yet more controversy trailing in his wake. The former ambassador's website was shut down after Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov threatened legal action over an article published on it earlier this month. Mr Murray, whose installation as rector follows a traditional pub crawl through Dundee city centre, has said he hopes to have his site back online today.

The timetable for this year's Dundee Mountain Film Festival has been announced, and promises to bring yet another line up of esteemed guests, exhibitions and presentations to the city. The festival will take place on November 21-24 at the Bonar Hall and Dundee University's Tower Building.

A Book examining the significance of circles has been unveiled at Dundee University. Simply entitled Circles, it has been launched together with an exhibition of art, which analyses the subject in relation to everyday life. Professor of visual psychology Nick Wade said: "Circles are powerful perceptually and they convey symbolic significance in human art and artefacts."

Ceremony to install new bishop
Hundreds turned out to see the new Scottish Episcopal bishop for Aberdeen and Orkney installed in his new position. Church figures from home and abroad attended the St Andrew's Cathedral service of consecration to appoint the Right Rev Bob Gillies, who was elected to the position earlier this year. The Right Rev Gillies, pictured, who previously held the position of chaplain to Dundee University.
