gc Reunions
Townplanners '79
The Class of '79 Reunion in September bought town-planning graduates together from as far south as Brighton and as far north as Inverness. During the weekend, specially chosen to coincide with Dundee Doors Open Day, the graduates witnessed a range of city changes including Dundee Contemporary Arts and the Wellcome Trust Building which have added to the stature of Dundee during their absence. Naturally they also took time to catch up on the news from the years since their graduation.
Pictured are some of the graduates with staff members (seated front row, from left) Dave Gourlay, Anne Mather, Professor Greg Lloyd, Bill Edgar and Dr Ralph Skea.
Medics of yesteryear
A group of UK medics who graduated 50 years ago, returned to their former campus in August to see at first hand some of the impressive new facilities which have put the University of Dundee on the world map for biomedical research. The "Class of 49" - 16 consultants, GPs and surgeons, now retired, toured the Wellcome Trust Building after an initial welcome by its director Professor Sir Philip Cohen as part of their 50 year reunion celebrations. The group, who studied at a time when the medical profession was only just beginning to benefit from Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin, returned to Dundee from all over the UK, to tour the university's £14 million "citadel of science" where over 250 researchers are engaged in understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind global diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cancer, inflammation and tropical diseases.
The visit looks like establishing a new tradition. The trend began when medics from the Class of 48 visited last year as part of their 50 year reunion - they passed the message on to their juniors in the Class of 49 who decided they too would like to see the impressive new facilities at the University. Not to be outdone the Class of 47 caught up by visiting the following week
