Beacon
Third year sculpture student, Maggie MacManus, well and truly put Dundee on the global map for the new millennium when her creative talents won the Scottish Gas competition to design the National Millennium Beacon for Scotland this month. During the millennium celebrations her 15 foot beacon could be seen world-wide soaring into the skies from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle while being lit as the final beacon in a chain starting in the Shetland Islands.

Football
The University's Chaplaincy received a rather unusual visit when Scotland's football manager, Craig Brown, gave his views on faith and football for the first of a series of public lunchtime fora organised by Chaplain Fiona Douglas. A former teacher, Craig gave an exceptionally lively, funny and inspirational presentation and took time to sign autographs for queuing students after the event.

Most cited
Professors David Lane and Sir Philip Cohen hit the headlines once more when it was announced that they were the second and third most cited biomedical scientists in the whole of the UK. A list prepared by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) placed Professor Lane - internationally known as the discoverer of p53, the "guardian angel" of the cell - second, and Sir Philip - renowned for his work in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of many global diseases - third for the world-wide impact and relevance of their work.

Tooth Decay
University dental researchers announced that they would be uniting with health visitors and practising Dundee dentists to tackle the poor record of child tooth decay in Scotland. After the results of a five year study indicated that children in Dundee reflect this poor record funding has been allocated by the UK National Health Service research and development programme to enable a preventative programme to be devised. By enabling health visitors to identify babies most at risk from developing tooth decay before it has even begun, preventative treatments can be administered in an attempt to avert any early decay.
