DCA opens
Dundee Contemporary Arts -the £9 million flagship centre for the visual arts finally opened its doors offering Dundee and its public unparalleled access to cutting edge art technology as well as a window on the international art and cinema scene. The centre forms a partnership between the University, Dundee City Council and DCA Ltd with funding of around £5.4 million from the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund and houses the University's Visual Research Centre - a new art laboratory specifically for the purpose of art research.
Dean of Dentistry and director of the Dental Health Services Research Unit at the University, Professor Nigel Pitts received an international award for his contribution to dental research. The H Trendley Dean Memorial Award was presented to him at the International Association for Dental Research in Vancouver. His research has allowed Scotland and the UK to lead the world in producing an accurate picture of the population's dental health upon which governments and health chiefs can act.
Alan Murray, postgraduate student at the University's "green accountancy" unit was presented with a £1,000 business scholarship by Mr Alasdair Peacock, company secretary of Alldays plc. The Ian McPherson Memorial Prize is donated annually by the Dundee-based convenience stores operators to aid the development of local business talent. Alan who was "absolutely thrilled and flattered" to have been selected for the award currently researches at the University into share prices and how the market perceives and behaves towards companies.
Nearly 100 delegates from around the world converged on Dundee University for the world's first conference to focus on architectural drawings. The successful multi-disciplinary event was organised by the department of history, University archives and the library conservation unit for historians, archivists and conservators and investigated the production, interpretation, selection and preservation of architectural drawings.
