Rob Black
Interactive Media Design

a photo of Rob Black's work `Meet people, make music'. That is the simple rationale behind Rob Black's interactive table, a new social music-generating tool that has already created a stir on its first public appearance at a Dundee bar.

The table-top is a surface on to which a mix of eight marked cubes can be placed - each cube acts as a different instrument. The cubes have four symbols on them with each one representing a different beat, riff or section that work together to complete a musical composition, giving the users there individual control and a feeling of being part of a group.

As the cubes are then moved around the surface, they can manipulate volume, tempo, pitch and a myriad of other effects.

"The idea behind it is to have a new social interaction tool, but the potential applications extend right across the leisure industry," said Rob (25), from Dundee.

"We set it up for a night at Drouthy Neebors bar in Dundee and it didn't take along before there were people gathering around it, starting to play with it and speaking about it."

Lynne MacLachlan
Jewellery and Metal Work

a photo of Lynne MacLachlan's work Bringing together craft techniques with technology, Lynne MacLachlan has created a unique set of jewellery which has united mathematics with nature. Inspired by the insects' wings, normally butterflies, Lynne has taken this shape into photoshop and CAD in order to create a three dimensional repeating pattern. From her resulting computer files the patterns are laser cut and photoetched onto silver. Lynne then soldered the pieces together, using enamels to introduce colour into the complex forms of bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings. Her eyecatching pieces have secured her a place in London on Royal College of Art's Masters in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metal Work and Jewellery course.

Tom Drysdale
Graphic Design

a photo of Tom Drysdale's work Coming from a family who owns a foundry and engineering business, Tom Drysdale is certainly not short of the skills to take graphic design into the third dimension. An ambitious interactive 3-d stainless steel 'timepiece', with a strapline of '250 years of timeless play', was his reponse to a brief set by Hamleys Toy Store in London to create an identity for their 250th anniversary in 2010. With Hamley's at the centre of its own universe, the disc is made up from concentric rings. The first set represent units of time, from seconds right up to centuries. The second set contains the etched images of 250 classic toys, a toy for each year Hamley's has been open. The timepiece device is a hand operated, allowing the operator to turn the rings simultaneously or in opposing directions. After graduation Tom hopes to work with a graphics company that allows him to continue to design and fabricate interactive pieces.

Alanna Cochrane
Interior and Environmental Design

a photo of Alanna Cochrane's work Alanna's study and industry experience from an Erasmus year in Holland has influenced her design for a flexible environmentally friendly home lighting solution. This project has led her to learn about glass blowing in the Highlands and receive sponsorship from B&Q for her materials. It has also been fully endorsed by Dr Matt Prescott, the Director of E-Day and Ban The Bulb who congratulated Alanna by saying: 'I think that Alanna's efforts to design a product which glorifies an energy efficient lighting design are highly original and extremely important'. The design has been pared down to simple but beautiful components that are environmentally friendly and easy to use. Alanna has designed it so that the glass form can be displayed on a table-top or hung from the ceiling and, if you get bored of it as a lamp, can even be used as a vase for flowers.

Andrew Stevenson
a photo of Andrew Stevenson's work Andrew Stevenson, 22, is from Northern Ireland. He grew up during the troubles and the events of his youth have influenced the textiles he now designs. His work is beautiful to look at, but the gritty images of barbed wire and bricks that are part of his handwoven material, remind us that textile can bring a bigger message than simply being aesthetically pleasing. The city he grew up in, Belfast, is scarred and this is reflected in his work. When he graduates from Duncan of Jordanstone, Andrew will complete a Masters at the Royal College of Art in London.
