Elizabeth Smith
Architecture
The creativity of Scottish artist Richard Demarco provided the inspiration for architecture student Elizabeth Smith's "playful" design to house one of the country's finest art collections.
Elizabeth (26), from Cork opted to design an archive building for the Demarco Foundation as her fourth year project which will be on display at this year's degree show.
"I wanted it to be a journey through the Demarco collection allowing for visitor interaction with the pieces instead of a sealed archive," she explained. "I've used heavy earthy materials to ground it to the site and contrasted that with lightweight crystalline materials to shroud the galleries.
"It is a very playful design because of the content of the archives," said Elizabeth, who worked as an architectural technician before studying for her degree. "It has been really good fun to work on. It's almost a shame to be finishing it."
Richard Demarco was awarded an honorary degree by the University in 1996. His art collection, the Demarco Archives, is being digitised in an ongoing project at the University's Visual Research Centre.
The Dundee School of Architecture
The School addresses many complex issues: conceptual speculative design, cultural appropriateness and
technical resolution. Only an architect is trained to have this holistic understanding of building design
and its study involves a combination of analysis, understanding and creative problem solving. All year 5
Masters students' work is based on unit themes: urbanism, responsive design, material expression, event
and place as generators for rich and diverse interpretations of what constitutes architecture.
Dean of School: Graeme Hutton.
