Sabine Klaus - Time Based Art
Sabine Klaus looks to answer the question 'Where do we come from?' In her installation, she approaches the question in three ways, through personal, mythical and scientific investigations.
In the personal investigation, she has created the birth tunnel where the viewer can actually pass through and watch a video in which Sabine plunges her head in and out of water to recreate the sense of being born.
For the scientific approach, she has created another tunnel, which in this case represents a scientific laboratory that the viewer can walk through and watch a video of chromosomes under a microscope.
Finally, in the mythical section Sabine presents a model of an x chromosome entwined with strands of her own hair that she collected over the period of four years.
Louise Davidson - Time Based Art
Twenty-five-year-old Louise Davidson from Arbroath has spent her final year creating a documentary on the Black Watch. With a brother who serves in the Black Watch, Louise became deeply interested in the plans to amalgamate the six Scottish regiments and her video creates a record of the immense emotion felt across Scotland at the proposed changes.
Louise met with politicians and celebrities as well as following the Black Watch on their rallies across Scotland, interviewing soldiers and their families to capture the profound effect the Black Watch story has invoked. Through her video interviews, Louise has successfully conveyed the emotional angles to the planned regiment changes, which until now have been rarely documented. Her documentary flags up the historical importance of the regiment and the personal loss and dismay felt by the people.
Following her experience of making this documentary, Louise wants to embark on a career in journalism after graduating.
Paul McCluskey - Time Based Art
Paul Maclusky's work centres on a campaign to free his friend from a life sentence for murder that he has been serving in Shotts prison since February 2004. Working with the Miscarriage of Justice Organisation Paul hopes that an appeal to be held in May will result in the release of William Gage, a man who was convicted despite major discrepancies in the evidence. These irregularities have been highlighted in a report by the Honourable Lord Emslie for the appeal. The murder of a man with gangland ties took place in Glasgow in March 2002.
In his work Paul has recently organised a protest held outside the High Court in Glasgow and another is to be held outside Shotts prison on Wednesday 27th April. He has also worked to highlight the case through articles in the Daily Record, the Sun, the Herald and the Big Issue who are keen supporters of the campaign. As well as this a successful charity fundraising event has been held. Paul maintains regular contact with William Gage and views his work as a collaboration between them both. His degree show will consist of an abstract documentary of the case, slides of William combined with text and a correspondence piece based on their lengthy communications since William was sentenced. His work will be shown in two 12 x 8 booths that reference the size of a prison cell.
Alexandra Hodgson - Illustration
If you need to know any facts about teeth, 21-year old Illustration student Alexandra Hodgson is the person to see. Flicking through her four fanzines the reader will come across facts such as 'a missing tooth indicates a lack of ambition', a diagram of how to extract loose teeth with a rattrap, plus drawings of teeth belonging to dinosaurs, pigeons and bugs. Combining facts of a scientific, historical and fantastical nature, Alexandra hopes that her highly entertaining volumes on teeth will allude to a wider exploration of truth, personal identity and the expression of self.
Alexandra will distribute flyers about her fanzines throughout Dundee. She has also made t-shirts to accompany her four volumes. After college Alexandra is currently exploring the possibilities of travelling to Lapland to document the life of nomadic deer cultures and hopes to do a Masters Degree in the future.
Stuart Fallon - Illustration
People can accumulate much during their lifetime but what happens to their possessions and thoughts after their death? 22-year old Illustration student Stuart Fallon has been inspired to make work that explores this question through examining the evidence from unknown ordinary people's lives that he has uncovered. From a rich diary covering one woman's caravan holiday to a single purchase on Ebay of one man's documents covering his acceptance at nursery school to the termination of his mortgage, Stuart weaves together these fragments to make new, poignant narratives in his printed collages and photographs.
Closer to home, Stuart will also be showing a series of photographs of his grandparents' home in which nothing has changed since his grandmother died.
Emma Fyfe - Animation
Emma Fyfe, a 21-year old Animation student from Dunfermline believes that Animation should not only be for entertainment but can be a useful teaching aid. Her short film follows a bacteria particle as it enters the human body and follows its journey through the immune process. Fyfe believes that her film is timely in view of the current fears of bird flu and the MRSA virus. Looking at the subject of infection, it questions whether or not we can control it. Fyfe hopes to go on to do an MSc Animation and Visualisation at DJCAD, building links between the art college, Medical School and Ninewells with her animations.
